Hotel Owners in Abuja Threaten to Close

The Hotel Owners Forum in Abuja has threatened to close down hotels in the FCT if the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) insists on increasing charges for waste disposal.

According to Premium Times, Mr. Ekong, The president of the forum made the threat in an interview in Abuja on Thursday, he said that the director of the board had challenged the hike in the charges, saying that it would lead to irreversible price increase in hotel services.

He also said that, "As if the prevailing harsh economic environment is not enough, on June 1, the AEPB issued a new billing regime to our members, which reflects more than 1,683 percent increase."

"This is over and above the provisions of the Waste Management Regulation of 2005, which is in the gazette. The said new bills were retroactively backdated to January 2012.

"It is noted that the increase in this new price regime is the highest rate ever witnessed in the history of price adjustment in the FCT."

According to reports, Mr Ekong said that the forum has given the board one month ultimatum to reverse the hike in waste charges, otherwise, the association would hold a street protest after which it would go to court.

According to Mr Ekong, the board had given the hotels 21 days notice to pay the bill to avoid the shutdown of hotels in Abuja.

Reports says that the Director, AEPB, Isah Shuiabu, said that the hospitality industry and other commercial ventures had been grossly under-charged by the board, hence the need for an increase. He said that the increase was not based on arbitrary administrative decision, but on technical objectives.

He said the waste charges would not only be on the number of rentable rooms, but on all other activities generating waste.

Hotel Owner in Debt- Generators Siezed

Mirage Hotel owned by the immediate past minister of culture and tourism, Chief Edem Duke has been in debt of N52M. According to reports by Punch. Cross River state high court in Calabar ordered the seizure of four of the hotel generators.

Reports says that the four generators were on Monday removed from the premises of the hotel in Calabar, the state capital by Sypet Oil and Chemical Limited.

The hotel failed to settle the bill of N52M which had increased from October 30, 2014 to August 29, 2016. The issue resulted from outstanding bill owed; as a result of judgement delivered in October 2014 by the preceding judge of the State High Court in Calabar, Justice Ofem ordered the hotel to pay the sum of N2.93M to Sypet Oil and Chemical Limited as balance payment for Automotive Gas and Oil (Diesel) that was supplied to the hotel for usage on the facility.

Punch reports that the hotel failed to settle the debt forcing the Oil company to approach the court for a garnishee order to enforce the judgement in July.

As a result of this, the payment have still not being made because accroding to report, Utang, The company solicitor said," This discovery has prompted us to effect judgement by carting away the generators which could be sold after seven days to settle the debt"

Reasons Why Hotels are Expensive in Nigeria

There has been lots of skepticism relating to the reasons why hotels are expensive in Nigeria.Lots of foreigners come into the country and make the same complaints, Nigerians travel out of the country and come back to give the same complaints. The question is why?

According to Vanguard Newspaper, it reported that An hotel consultant, Gbnenga Oladele in a chat said hotels rely on diesel powered generators which costs fortunes, coupled with the fact that there is a major issue with electricity supply in Nigeria.

According to reports, he said, " if i have one guest in my hotel, I need to supply electricity. Some hotels prepared their budget for this year on N135 per litre for diesel, but today diesel is being sold in the range of N245. The question is where do you put the extra cost? Is it on rooms or food?

He also said, the issue of multiple taxes ia also another problem, which needs to be resolved before the cost of hotel in the country can be addressed.

"The government that is supposed to be helping hotel business is killing the sector with excess taxes. In Lagos, you have the consumption tax after the VAT. How do you expect business to survive when one has to pay different taxes?

He also added, "but with the way things are going, businesses are finding it tough to cope, while unemployment is increasing."

From my perspective, hotel business in Nigeria is lucrative but within the last couple of months to a year now, it's getting tougher, hotels are being shut down because they can't afford to pay this so called TAX, some can't meet up to the competition, others can't afford to pay staff. Everything boils down to ridiculous tax demand, high cost of energy, poor customer service from staff; simply because hotels can't hire personnel with good work experience, they would rather go for the poorly educated ones that will accept the poor salary they are offering, lack of good infrastructures in the country, high NEPA bill.....

There has to be a solution for us to enjoy the hotel business and for the job to get into the hands of those truly qualified to handle it.

Friday Inspiration

Employers are at their happiest on Mondays,
Employees are at their happiest on Fridays - Mokokoma

It's Friday, go get your groove on and stay happy, - Sade

"For Friday: You will need to know the difference between Friday and a fried egg. It's quite a simple difference, but an important one. Friday comes at the end of the week, whereas a fried egg comes out of a chicken, like most things, of course, it isn't quite that simple. The fried egg isn't properly a fried egg until it's been put in a frying pan and fried. This is something you would,t do to a Friday, of course, though you might do it on a Friday. You can also fry eggs on a Thursday, if you like, or on a cooker. It's all rather complicated, but it makes a kind of sense if you think about it for a while" - Douglas Adams, The Salmon of Doubt.

Review - Obudu Mountain Resort

I made a visit to Obudu mountain ranch in 2005 precisely when it was still kind of under development, technology back then wasn't so good back then, meaning I couldn't capture the moments on a phone or I pad, although pictures where taken but they were snapshots with the normal old cameras.

Nevertheless I will upload google image pictures. Obudu mountain resort used to be referred to as Obudu cattle ranch back then, very nice place to be in Nigeria. If you haven't been there, then you might not fully understand what I'm trying to write here. The mountain resort is located in Obudu in Cross River State. It is approximately 110 kilometer east of the town of Ogoja, that's about two and half hours drive from Ogoja. It is 30 minutes drive from Obudu Town and about 332 kilometer  drive from Calabar which is 5 hours drive. Charter air service can also be used from the Bebi airport.

The weather condition up there is one that can be compared to western countries during winter especially during the cold season in Nigeria. You need to be up there with your winter coats. The climate is semi temperate mountain climate. Driving up to the mountain resort is through a curvy road, it's so magical and unbelievable that cars can actually drive through that path which goes up from below until you get to the top where you can virtually see the cloud demarcating you and the village below.

According to history the mountain ranges where first explored in 1949 by Mr. Macaulay, a Scottish rancher. He camped on the mountain top of the Oshie ridge on the Sankwala montains for a month before returning with Mr Hugh Jones. History says, although it has been through turbulent times but as we know now, it's a tourist attraction to the masses and the international community.

Recently the cable car which was added then is now functional for easy access to the view around the mountain top. There are hotel rooms for lodging, mini sporting facilities, a natural swimming pool which can be described as luxury, it's got a massive green field for camping, bird watching. Very healthy cattles are also reared there and their milk processed into dairy milk, yogurt and cheese.

All these were free when I went to the ranch except accommodation and feeding, unfortunately it comes with a price now.

Visit Obudu Mountain Resort and have a wonderful experience in Nigeria you couldn't have dream't of.

6 Common Misconceptions About Hotels

Generally in every continent, there has been various perspectives from people about hotels which have been classified as misconceptions. Here they are below:

Bed Bugs in Budget Hotels: Bed bugs are not only found in budget hotels, simply because they are affordable doesn't necessarily indic
ate that they are dirty or breed bed bugs, this can be found as well as in high end hotels, resorts or luxurious hotels if the hotel is not well fumigated.

Expensive weekend rates: It isn't a confirmed fact that hotels are expensive during weekends, it depends largely on the type of hotel, there bookings for the weekend and charging rates. For further explanation, hotels with high clientele would generally want to charge higher during the weekend when their sales are usually high but a hotel with low one would rather charge lower to pull in guests which would boost their sales for that weekend. Some would even take up idea of weekend promo.

Hotel staff are available to guests: Hotel staff aren't for rent or available to satisfy the desires or demands of guests, customer service is paramount but not that type of service.guests are responsible for their personal care in that aspect, hotel staff are their to provide official services which the hotel has publicly offered to the populace.

Spy cameras in rooms: Have you had situations where guests feel vulnerable about rooms, having this weird feeling that their are spy cameras in their rooms to view all their activities? Well this isn't true, it's against the laws and principles of hotels and is never done. CCTV's are only present in hotel where they are visible for guests to see and are for security purposes which hotels need to have for their own safety as well as that of the guests.

Cheap Hotels are bad: Hotels that offer low rates aren't necessarily bad are unkept, high end hotel can also be badly kept depending on the management. If staffs aren't well trained, services offered by hotel will be substandard. Hotels that offer cheap rates do so to increase traffic into their hotel which isn't a bad idea for generating high profit.

Hotels meet all demands: Their is a general belief that all hotels give out complimentary items such as towels, pajamas and so on. Giving out complimentary items is determined by the hotel management which is usually done by luxurious or high end hotels. All the hotels cannot afford to give out such items due to their rates and profit margin. Guests are not permitted to walk out of the hotel premises with hotel items without prior information by the hotel. Hotels don't offer all services.

Tourist Attractions In Lagos- Badagry

Lagos is the center of excellence in Nigeria and usually referred to as Eko o ni baje. It's a very good tourist center of attraction and a few places to visit in Lagos will be mentioned.

Badagry: Its a location in Lagos which was founded in the early 15th century on a Lagoon, off the Gulf of Guinea, it's protected harbor led to the town becoming a key port in the export of slaves to America, where they were majorly Salvador, Bahia in Brazil, from the early 1840's, following the suppression of the slave trade, Badagry declined significantly, but became a major site of Christian mission work. Christianity was first preached in Nigeria at Badagry in 1842 by Rev Thomas Birch Freeman and he celebrated the first Christmas in Nigeria the following year.

In 1863, the town was annexed by the united kingdom and incorporated into the Lagos colony. In 1901, it became a part of Nigeria. Badagry subsists largely on fishing and Agriculture, and maintains a small museum of slavery. This is the first storey building in Nigeria, overlooking the Marina waterfront. It was built in 1842 by the missionaries. The town inhibits dwellers from all over the country doing different businesses in the town. Some trade in clothing, food items, used cars from overseas and other imported goods. The town is just a few kilometers from Seme border town to Republic of Benin and generates the highest Nigeria customs duties income till date.

The Badagry Black Heritage museum housed in the former district officer's office built in 1863,holds hundreds of artifacts and historical relics that chronicle more than three hundred years of the movement of slaves through Lagos from the early 1500's Badagry was one of the many trading and transport areas in West Africa for slaves being shipped off to America. It is estimated that roughly 550,000 African slaves passed through this area.

In 2012, De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi, The Akran of Badagry Kingdom, bestowed upon Mayor Dr. James L. Walls, Jr, President of the world conference of Mayors a chieftancy title as the 'Yenawa of Badagry Kingdom' making him the only living chief from the western world.

Up until now, Badagry has still been maintained as a popular major tourist center in Lagos, Nigeria, where you see influx of foreigners making visits to the location to have a look at the slave trade center and museum housing the old antiques. It's a place to visit by all.

Challenges of Running a Hotel

Comfort, affordability and cleanliness are paramount in the hotel industry which was mentioned in our last post. All this are at a cost. The questions needed to be asked is what makes up a successful hotel.

The success of a hotel is determined by so many factors which will be discussed fervently in the next post. According to today's topic; challenges of running a hotel are as follows:

Staff
Cost
Maintenance
Economic Factors

I believe we all know that the success of a hotel is determined majorly by the staff, an unhappy staff makes the workplace sad, which in turn makes the guests unhappy through bad, unsatisfactory services delivered. Regular training procedures need be put in place, incentives shouldn't be left out, it's a motivating factor for them. Treatments and disciplinary actions on staff should be looked into. One bad egg can make other eggs corrupt. One bad service delivered can lead to disappearance of ten guests from a hotel.

Their has to be a balance between costs of running a hotel and profit made. Businesses are established to make profit not for sight seeing or fun. For the hotel to maintain its sumptuousness, it has to be well established and looked after. It's environment has to speak opulence, what will make this happen is money, the costs to achieve these is high but has to be done.

Lack of regular maintenance will make it crumble under your nose, it's like a mirage. The maintenance team, if not well trained or structured leads to a hotel running at a high cost and will make a hotel a 'lack of profit making machine'

As discussed in the previous post, illiteracy, unemployment, poverty are results of bad economy, which are the diminishing factors of hotel, which has to be tackled quickly and effectively.

Overcoming these challenges will bring good results and make hotels a good work place for everybody and a solitude for people to go to for relaxation.

Hotels in Nigeria

According to tradingeconomics.com, the Nigerian population was estimated at 18.2 million people in 2015, according to the latest census figures. Looking back in the year of 1960, Nigeria had a population of 45.2 million people.

However the high popular density in Nigeria doesn't signify that all hotels will be fully occupied, this is due to high unemployment rate, illiteracy, economic flaws; these has automatically countered the high demand for utilizing these facilities. Correction of these list will increase the demand for it's usage and not just the dependability of hotel occupancy on foreigners, rich men and companies alone, but instead individuals that can afford it will also be able to enjoy the luxury.

Nigeria has 36 states and in each one of them are various categories of hotels:

Abia
Adamawa
Anambra
Akwa Ibom
Bauchi
Bayelsa
Benue
Borno
Cross River
Delta
Ebonyi
Enugu
Edo
Ekiti
Gombe
Imo
Jigawa
Kaduna
Kano
Katsina
Kebbi
Kogi
Kwara
Lagos
Nasarawa
Niger
Ogun
Ondo
Osun
Oyo
Plateau
Rivers
Sokoto
Taraba
Yobe
Zamfara
The federal capital territory being Abuja. As mentioned earlier, each location has numerous varying sizes of hotels and classification. According to NPCN, Kano has the largest population in Nigeria of 9,401,288, followed by Lagos with a population of 9,113,605.

However, more than half of the population cannot afford the 'home away from home'. Putting in place the common necessities of life will help the population to afford the luxury the hotels are providing and in turn hotels in Nigeria will make more capital for further maintenance and upgrade. Tourism will also increase in Nigeria, which will be discussed further on this blog.
